[Music] pain, anxiety, fear, and the soul's inner torment are the fruits of the human fall which entered the world through self-love. These vapors cloud the soul and give rise to worry. Yet the natural state of man is joy because God is joy and the soul is his breath. God created the soul and it naturally journeys toward him. Therefore anxiety is unnatural to human life. It has no rightful place in it. And yet today it is rare to find a truly joyful person which means it is equally rare to find a stable, peaceful and spiritually healthy person. Worry has become a terrible illness, one that dominates the world. It may be the greatest torment of humanity, the most profound inner drama. It is not just the edge of hell. It is already the experience of hell in this life. The absence of joy is the absence of God. Just as joy is the sign of his presence. A person who belongs to this world and delights in fleeting passions may feel a momentary pleasure. But if we look more deeply, we will see that his life is filled with anxiety and restlessness. Just as scripture says, affliction and sorrow are in the soul of everyone who does evil. Where God's command is broken, true joy cannot exist. And where God's law is fulfilled, worry cannot remain. Joy is rare today, not because it is something lofty or extraordinary, but because we have drifted away from what is natural. Joy is as natural to the soul as sight is to the eyes. A blind man might exclaim, "Oh, you can see." So too, when someone lives with spiritual joy, others are astonished and ask, "You're joyful." because they have grown used to a life of spiritual blindness, of inner torment, of falsehood and sin. But joy is nothing new. It is the natural fragrance of a soul in harmony with God. It is a quiet strength that upholds and sustains us in the spiritual life. [Music]
