[Music] let's take a look at a brief history of management history helps us better understand the current developments and to avoid repeating mistakes in the world of management early literature on management was written by management practitioners who described their experiences and attempted to elaborate basic principles more recent literature comes from researchers there are different classifications of management approaches or schools of management thought there are five management theories the classical behavioral management science systems and contingency theories the classical theorists focus on the job and management functions to determine the best way to manage in all organizations scientific management stressed job efficiency through the development of technical skills will administrative theory stress rules and the structure of the organization frederick winso taylor an engineer known as the father of scientific management focused on analyzing jobs and redesigning them so they could be accomplished more efficiently frank gilbreth and his wife lillian used time and motion studies to develop more efficient work procedures henry feil was a french engineer who sometimes was referred to as the father of modern management he made a clear distinction between operating and managerial activity fail identified five major functions of management planning coordinating organizing controlling and commanding two other contributors to administrative management are max weber and chester bernard weber was a german sociologist who developed the bureaucracy concept the aim of this concept of bureaucracy was to develop a set of rules and procedures to ensure that all employees were treated fairly mary parker follett stressed the importance of people rather than engineering techniques follic contributed to the administrative theory by emphasizing the need for worker participation conflict resolution and shared goals she's best known for the integrative conflict resolution concept where all parties agree to a conflict resolution rather than one person dominating and winning in the other losing the trend today is towards increasingly higher levels of employee participation bernards and follett's contributions led to the development of behavioral theory many organizations still use classical management techniques successfully today large organizations are becoming more efficient using a classic management approach [Music] you
