seated we welcome you to the 63rd graduation ceremony of Singapore Polytechnic at this ninth session we will be presenting diplomas and other Awards to graduates from the school of electrical and electronic engineering may I now invite our principal and chief executive officer Mr solwaywa to deliver the graduation address Mr so please [Applause] Mr sharing Abdul Salam the managing director at the smrt Thompson East coastline distinguished guests parents family members colleagues graduates ladies and gentlemen good afternoon and welcome to Singapore polytechnics 63rd graduation ceremony we were founded in 1954 and our first graduation ceremony was held in 1961. in the year 2000 we graduated our 100 000 graduate and this year at the end of our graduation ceremony week we were graduated 230 000 graduates we are the only Polytechnic and perhaps a few other universities will be able to make this proud declaration I congratulate all the 5 345 graduates this year for your achievement and determination in particular the 297 of you here receiving your certificates in this room your achievement has been all the more remarkable because of the very trying circumstances that you went through the last three years you have overcome despite having to do so under the shadow of the pandemic now having been refined through the testing all of you can be proud and honored to join the 230 000 odd network of illustrious alumni like you they had entered the gifts of SP and gone through our rigorous and caring education and then they've gone on to help build Singapore over the last six decades and they say among the parents and family members here are many of such illustrious SP alumni I hope all of you graduates today will draw inspiration from the outstanding alumni and continue the SP tradition of contributing to Singapore's development transforming the country it was a strong economy and a caring Society as an alumnus or SV we are now part of this SP Network where you can enjoy a range of benefits and privileges you can network with fellow alumni you can leverage on them to seek out job opportunities and for industry Partnerships and our SP education and career guidance officer will be available to you now and continue to be so in the years to come to help you discover your strengths identify your options for further development so do feel free to consult them now and even in years to come having benefited from the SP experience alert you through strongly think about how you can give back consider helping out in the CCA groups or join the SP graduate's Guild and find out how you can contribute that to help our Learners thrive in this era of constant change SP has transformed ourselves we are no more just a politanic for young people we are politening for all ages we have committed ourselves to be an Institute of continual learning to support all of you in your ongoing Learning Journey well beyond your graduation through our wide-ranging continuous education and training programs we Endeavor to help you to upgrade and further develop your skills along the different stages of your ongoing career these programs will keep you relevant to the ever-changing industry landscape they cover areas of your specialty as well as emerging areas that will help you pivot according to the changes and demands of the economy for all of you will find these programs helpful as you face a world that will eventually rise above the shadow of the pandemic but still volatile uncertain complex and ambiguous always subjected to technological disruption beyond what you have received during your time in Sp you will have to constantly learn unlearn and re-learn in fact your Learning Journey will extend well beyond your time here it will be live long so your graduation today is really the beginning of a new relationship with SP because we want to be your lifelong Learning Partner in your continual Learning Journey so graduates today as I close I once afternoon is Mr Sharon Abdul Salam managing director of smrt TL private limited and Senior vice president strategic relations of smrt cooperation Mr Sharon is a fellow of the chartered institution of Railway operators UK the chairman of the uitp Asia Pacific Urban rail committee and a chartered engineer in Railway technology and systems Singapore he was Comfort the national day public service medal by the president of Singapore in 2019. more importantly Mr Sharon is a proud alumnus of the SPs diploma in electrical engineering Dee class of 1993. during his illustrious career Mr sharing was involved in building the middle east's first monorail system and overseeing the development and operation of the whole Dubai Railway and tram Network today Mr Sharon leads a team of 900 staff responsible for operating and maintaining Singapore's newest MRT line the tel he is also currently involved in the development of the first cross-border MRT line that will link Singapore and Johor Bahru it is now my parents pleasure to invite Mr Sharon Abdul Salam to deliver the graduation address Mr sharing please [Applause] I guess today is the only day of the whole series of Graduate Ceremony needed one can say May the fourth be with you a very good afternoon Mr so iwa principal and CEO of Singapore Polytechnic distinguished guests parents graduates ladies and gentlemen it is indeed a privilege to be back in the place where I spend three years of my youth and took the very first step into the world of engineering today I am deeply humbled and honored to be part of the Singapore polytechnics 63rd graduation ceremony graduates congratulations you deserve to feel proud for accomplishing an incredible feel that requires hard work dedication and perseverance success comes to those who work for it today is also a special day for your parents family and faculty members who has supported you throughout your journey in Sp let's give a round of applause to appreciate what they have done for you and for everyone to mark your success [Music] [Applause] well on this note I wish to thank the many lecturers that has well endure me when I was a student some have retired while some are still here for example Mr Gold saying without those endearing and nurturing teaching I am very sure I won't be here today graduates allow me to share lessons which I wish someone had told me when I was at your age and I'm sure you will learn a lot more along the way this will only make you a better person just like the sine wave well I mean electrical engineer so I got to bring that back yeah life is filled with ups and downs harmonics exist and that's natural but with resilience and clarity on the desired outcome you will achieve your goal pursue your future today serving with Mastery the SP call needs a clear purpose strong professionalism and a sense of passion in smrt we affectionately call them the three-piece they have kept me on track no puns intended I'm in a railway industry I've got to say that in my professional career and service to the community now let me begin with purpose 26 years ago as a fresh Engineering Graduate I was drawn to SMR this vision of moving people enhancing lifestyles which is aligned to my purpose of applying my knowledge of what I acquire to do good for the society Engineers design and build from the little gadgets to the large buildings and systems as chartered engineer in Railways I know our Engineers have an important role of keeping Singapore moving every day transportation is a heartbeat of our nation a journey of a Thousand Miles begin with a single step I started in smrt as a maintenance engineer and chose to work hard alongside alongside many colleagues I'm thankful for their generous sharing of experience and wisdom beyond what I have learned in school in 2008 I accepted the opportunity to lead the team from smrt to build the monorail system in Dubai and a network of autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi on my second stint overseas I work for the Dubai government's Road and transport Authority and oversaw the Dubai Metro and the Dubai tram projects these systems were the first of its kind in the Middle East working on such transformational projects was very tough however making Singapore proud motivated me and the team to persevere and overcome the challenges without that sense of purpose I won't have much to tell I recently read that Dubai Metro has now carried more than 2 billion passengers today I am blessed to work with a team of Highly skilled seemingly ordinary individuals but who delivers extraordinary outcomes on the Thompson East Coast Line the latest MRT line in Singapore I know singaporeans have high expectations of the MRT service that we are proud of this strong sense of pride may lead us to express our disappointment perhaps more on the social media Whenever there is a Train delay I confidently assure you that my colleagues who could be your family members your neighbor your friend are working very hard 24 by 7 giving the best always nobody wants to fail even during your lab assignment you overcome challenges right similarly our staff are determined to deliver a world-class MRT system and as singaporeans and those living in Singapore we should be proud of their work as you start your career or further your studies ask yourselves what motivates you what is excellence what impact can you make don't be ordinary be extraordinary be clear of your purpose and make a difference the second p is professionalism is embodied in smrt's core values of rice respect Integrity safety and service and excellence SP for the class of 2001 Works Intel he oversees the station operations and leads by example with his Mastery in operational procedures and exemplifies the smrt's core value he's here with us today [Applause] MRT line grows we are hiring more and those who are looking to pursue your career in Railway you know who to look for after this um we are hiring ball and everyone goes through a comprehensive training we care and are committed to invest in our people but they have a steep learning curve to adjust to the working environment and expectation I think Nissan would know this because you in turn Intel right nizam well you will too as well fear not be prepared now takes responsibility to augment the training by engaging every batch of staff and monitor their development with our start right and start strong spirit the staff can acclimatize themselves very quickly leading to a stronger teamwork improve Workforce performance and greater job satisfaction well I'm very proud to have this young in my team now the third p is Passion as Engineers you are entering a field that demands professionalism and excellence you will collaborate and communicate with colleagues and stakeholders you must have strong work ethics takes accountability for your actions and maintain your integrity Hallmarks of a recognized and respected engineers have the conviction in doing what is right and doing it right at smrt we believe in Kaizen continuous Improvement when we continuously strive for excellence tomorrow will be better than today one way we leverage one way is actually when we leverage on technology since 2018 my team has a strong collaboration with SP on several VR projects virtual reality last year we produced the very first true blue SP smrt product a trained driving simulator so a big shout out to Mr Kevin Ong and Mr sofian and the four Bachelors of students for the passion in engineering and constantly applying Kaizen in the design so that it will be more relevant for the application in the industry we can do more together engineering is about turning opportunities to overcome complexities to create and develop creative and innovative solutions this is the real real passion in conclusion as graduates of Singapore Polytechnic is what Mr Soul has mentioned earlier we inherit a rich Legacy that transcends personal achievements our responsibility is to use the skills and the knowledge that SP has provided to you to enhance the lives of others and contribute to the community I embrace the wisdom of the smrc's chairman Mr Moon Ming someone with deep knowledge and an exemplary leader who till today proudly calls himself an engineer is a recipient of IES lifetime engineering Achievement Award in 2022. he shared that in everything that we do we must do right do good and do well graduates as you continue in your journey remember to have Crystal Clear purpose a high standard of principal and CEO Mr sawaiwa ladies and gentlemen congratulations to my fellowee graduates of 2023 on this momentous achievement we started our journey amidst a global pandemic and yet here we are today I remember our first day of orientation at SP where we only showed up to collect our Digital Electronics module kit it wasn't the exciting stuff we had hoped for who can forget our year one days where we are to carry around our colorful toolboxes while trying to find our lab rooms and for lessons there was always a rush took in the ATS on time and let's not forget the thrill we felt while doing our last minute cramming before our examinations personally for me SP provided me with opportunities to grow and stretch Beyond boundaries the one I'm most grateful for is the one-year Polytechnic technology program with govtek during this program I had to do both my internship and study for modules all at the same time I took it up even though the idea seemed daunting in the beginning I did it to grow myself and wanted to gain experience of working in the real world I'm proud to say it was some of the best decisions I've made because it gave me the opportunity to connect with people gain soft skills and improve on my technical skills let's face the harsh truth life is not a piece of cake and success is not handled to us on a platter while it's fun to rank up in video games we need to rank up in real life by taking up extra online courses participating in cookery collectivities and seizing opportunities whenever they arrive we should not be afraid of failure when taking up new opportunities to improve and level up because it's through these failures that we it's through these failures and experiences that we rise to become stronger if I had been too afraid to take up the opportunities given to me by SP I would have missed out on so much knowledge experience and connections let's take a moment to express our gratitude to those who helped us in our SP journey to our parents who had our backs and kept us going to our lecturers who pushed us and motivated us to become better and to our classmates and SP mates who were always there to joke around vent and support us through this roller coaster of student life in the words of Napoleon Bonaparte great men are meteors designed to burn so that Earth may be lighter let's go out there and make our mark on the road congratulations once again Triple A graduates of 2023.
