great to see you all here today and thank you all for coming and we'll have reverted back to Winter and some of them because it's a very shortly turn and calling myself um I'm going to pray as we quickly get ourselves today and let's play together thank you for the ability to come to come and freedom today to come and experience your goodness or we thank you that your healing this place through your Holy Spirit as he is here because that's the problem she gave us to your work I will pray that today we would experience your goodness we experience here they will hear you speaking through the songs Through the prayers it was said from the front ultimately Lord we ask for you to have your will for your will to be done in this place Lord we want to give glory to you we want to see our relationships with you grow and each other the relationships with each other grow however we are on the family of God here we are the children of the king and we want to grow and deepen our going to be ready to Mark you six and there's one to five and verses 16 to 18. chapter six be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them if you do you'll have no reward from your father in Heaven so when you get to the needy Do not announce it with the trumpets and the Hypocrites doing the synagogues and on the streets to be honored by others truly I tell you they have received their reward and filled the way you get up to the needy do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so they're giving me being Secret then your father who sees what is done in the secret will rewardship it's the way you pray do not be like the Hypocrites for the love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others should I tell you they have received a rewarding too but when you pray go into your room close the door and pray to your father who is on the scene then your father receives what is done and seek him or reward you or 16. when you fast you know with the sombra's efforts to for they just figure their face to show others their fasting surely I tell you they've received their reward and fill but when you fast put oil in your head and wash your face so they'll not be obvious to others that you're fasting but only to your father who is unseen and your father who sees what is done and seeketh will reward you probably God become before you we thank you for your word or we want to be drawn into you today to know you better so Lord no matter my words that we hear that need you speaking to us for your colonialism amen and this section that we're looking at today um starts off with the phrase be careful be careful anything we see Jesus saying be careful we should pay attention because we because we're in a place where we could fall down like any parent Guardian been looking after a child trying something that looks a bit risky and I remember my mom always tell me to be careful you know boys [Music] Jesus wants the best you know much more than any painted gardening it was the best but what is he wanting us to be careful of he says in effect it's mindful of your motive while you're practicing your righteousness be mindful of your motive for your body of practice and your righteousness this idea practicing your righteousness is the way in which God invites us to be whom he has created us to be moving towards being more and more like Jesus Jesus comments are assuming that we are practicing he's assuming that they're practicing the various things that they're asking because you have to remember that Jesus wasn't speaking into a vacuum or just someone's trying to sound religious like a religious teacher he was speaking to real people and a real culture they had really expectations on them giving praying and fasting or ways of moving towards Holiness of showing that they were holding him if you if you were moving towards righteousness of piety or Holiness you'd be doing those things to speaking in very real things that people did in order to feel they were holy or feel that they were measuring up to God's standards and Jesus wasn't condemning giving praying and fasting definitely not he was commenting on what happens when people do it for the wrong reasons so this passage we see him walk us through those things don't do it this way we do it this way why would you do that why was he even addressing that one reason it was a very stoic culture the culture where you did hide your imperfections you need exactly the appearance of having all together not that much has changed in 2000 years the very religious culture very formally you can prescribe what it looked like to be holy praying she went to the Cooley he was like holy fast and make a big deal to him he went to the call they give publicly to assume that you would do those things to look quality and then that was why he talked with a Hypocrites the super religious people that went over the top they wanted everyone to know that they were doing these things and that they were holy the reason they were doing it was because they get accolades from people and Jesus was emphatic about the true reward for doing those things of that motive the reward that you would get received for approval from others who received admiration of others and if that was your goal well that's all you got Jesus saying there's a flash in Japan a short-lived award an importantly perspective where we have a list of things up on the screen so showing what people have done to be rewarded through their speech picked up an overhead so they can see receive a public recognition for it no knowing you guys I couldn't think of anyone would want that to happen because that would be really the case of it because as much as we do things that bring God's glory there's another side of us which of course we like to be thanked and rewarded you know we do have that kind of um you know kind of thing that we do there's another side of a square that is things we would rather not anyone ever know but the Brokenness and sin which behaved from other people but we can do a lot of things to appear when we have all together regardless of whether we're doing things good or things doing bad I can remember a great youth Fellowship we came to be in comedy um it's coming soon across the river sunsetting that you can very picturesque back when I was about 22 and we were having a sharing time during the end of the the can and then the Sunday after church and one of the girls that was there spoke about and shared very deeply about how she's been wearing a mask and a lot of people start to shame about doing the same and this isn't you know Halloween this is the metaphorical Mass [Music] but not actually coming out [Music] I'm doing okay but pushing is a bit deeper for just a moment of why we do those things why do we want to appear that we're okay in the United States and maybe we're in Turbo and then say that may not be you to hit here today you might be okay at the moment there are times in our lives where we're maybe not doing it's okay why we do why do we seek approval by the way since it looks like we have it all together and I believe that we all forever follower of Jesus not have the suspicion that there's something missing or broken within us I believe in the image of God within us no matter how marred or scarred or smudged with Brokenness within us has allowing to move towards wholeness we all have a desire to feel all to be felt held by God who can only offer those into the ultimate feeling of wholeness to take off the mask and be real with God and with each other I believe that God put out within us for us to be he made us in His image and therefore we have to Aspire to be here Lincoln we see that through Christ in the Bible they're wonderfully Jesus in content to let us stay broken he addresses these practices that really have the potential to be gateways to Union with God he refrains what a healthy motive looks like he talks about what the father sees the prayer of the father then your father who sees what is done in the secret will reward you the motive he's saying should be a reward from the father I'm not that proof of other people and then he refrains not just the motive he reframes what healthy Behavior looks like you know he gives us kind of strange analogy do not leave your left hand know where your right hand is doing so you may be going maybe done in a secret you're not literally obviously seeing that only your left I know what you're really doing he's not saying don't pray in public clearing the calls and chops to do this you're not saying don't get in public he's not saying your behavior should do that as an intimate command he's um and she's so great it should be he's saying your behavior should be that of an intimate connection with God not public display intend to earn the approve of others so Jesus is proposing radicals subversively the going against the thinking of that day and waiting people to think and act differently for the glory of God for their wholeness and ultimate for the renewal of all things here's this example to grab people and shape people out of their mindset and they need to perform he invites him into a deep communion and intimacy with God [Music] well to me that says a lot better in the short live 15 minutes of faith [Music] deep communion and intimacy of God did you as Firefly do you seek after him today that's the ultimate reward listen to what one of the commentator says about the rewards that Jesus invited into the first one is one that's so easy to miss seek the heart seek the heart of God and his kingdom first someone once said the serving the Moon is a Manifesto of what living in the kingdom is All Above it's the values of the Kingdom you can try so hard to do everything right and try to look good so maybe God will love us but Jesus is saying that these practices of giving and praying and fasting can either be a portal to communion with God on a pathway to something apart from God can be a way of connecting with God or actually if we're doing for the proof of others it drives us away from God now what really comes down to motive for the sermon the man is building towards Matthew 6 33. seek first the kingdom of God and is righteousness and then all these things will be given to you he's telling the Lesser he's telling us don't worry about your house in your car in your foot don't worry about the approval of others what everyone else thinks seek the kingdom of God's righteousness listen everything you need you're gonna get if you say your attention and seeking first the kingdom of God you're able to talk about sins of Brokenness addressed if you move towards Jesus about setting our attention the kingdom of God and his racing us letting Christ likeness our sanctification our ongoing changing and begin to happen in US our hearts will be molded in shape if we allow God to do it prepare a call to live in the way of Jesus with the Heart of Jesus and that's a difficult prayer I don't know if you've ever prayed that prayer God give me a Harley yours is opening up the world with the heart Brokenness because he breaks his heart breaks for us he wants to see us being born into wholeness recall to love in the way of Jesus to embody Jesus called together with the kingdom no and not just to wait for it in the future the best thing any of us can do is to pursue Jesus deeply to spend time to get to know his heart to get to know his way take steps every day to walk in there setting our intentions be still a high on making our motive chasing the kingdom of God confessing to God and giving him the rubbish of your life the sin is the wrong motives the sinful desires and asking them to burn them up to forgive you and make you clean ones more and that's something the daily prayer for most of us the first we must say our hearts focus on Jesus and his kingdom second [Music] we engage in healthy rhythms and practices that move us towards righteousness the developers more and more into the god creates us to do Jesus says is getting praying and fasting these are three things we can do the faith and the inspiration Came From First Timothy 4. have nothing to do with regardless of methods and always tell drama train yourself to be healthy training for godliness there are different types of practices there are different corporate practices like we're doing right now did you know you're doing a practice right now you're doing it here corporate prayer coming together even the church calendar and we journey through Advent or things like that those are corporate practices individual practices like prayers and scholarships taking yourself out is for five ten minutes walking through the field or whatever is outside your door fasting giving meditation from God's word reading the structures these are all individual practices we've been undertaken or one or two practices that you could put in place today I asked myself the same question but you have the different answer maybe about what you want to put in into practice it's your daily routine consistency is the key consistently read the scriptures meditate upon God's word be consistent in you know corporate worship come every week the thing we can really do is really important lessons the voice of the spirit we should all be seeking first the kingdom of God we should all be engaging in some kind of Rhythm and practice we're invited into that invited about forced the third thing is about what the spirit of God has called you to do did you know that God cares about Unity [Music] did you know that he cares about you uniquely but Jesus talks about a kingdom it says subjects is children working together not just a few people in 20 80 or 20 of people do the work in the 80 enjoy it that everyone has their part to play there are different kinds of gifts for our students and says to the same spell of Destruction there are different kinds of service but the same Lord there are different kinds of working but in all of them and everyone it is the same God that worked it's the same God work within each of us changing us ministering to us working and shaping our hearts Now teams won the manifestation of the spirit has given to the common goods which is here right now and we're brought into the film when Christ comes again and nowhere is not required we're all regarded as significant and required to serve God because the kingdom of God is just says not a someday thing I don't think it's our way to Jesus returns to the Sikh kingdom of God and enjoy it then it's a posture God is calling us to do now I thought loving in the way of Jesus but the Heart of Jesus loving in the way of Jesus with the Heart of Jesus is using have God's uniquely wired us to make a difference to partner with Jesus it's how things move towards Shalom deep peace not drifting and talking but doing and listening for some of all these gifts and maybe just talking to people you don't usually talk to maybe this better mention someone bring someone to mind actually I need to pick up that phone for some reason maybe simple what the spirit calls us to do others may be complex I know that part of practicing righteousness is possession ourselves to listen to if you want the nudge of the spirit I remember being told um but I remember being told was scream I remember when I was younger or nowadays it's the hell is that and I'll say I will I'll do it tomorrow [Music] but there's a disconnect between doing this and actually doing it and spell it speaks to us very easy to mind if it reminds us again I need to pick up that phone into whatever it is I need to to connect with that person I need to maybe do something a bit more whales actually prelimited what to appear what because that's what God's calling me to do but the fourth point which is how many calories to respond because it's better to cause you to do something with a nice important recognize that we practice our righteousness and is that word of practice or righteousness but we're not always going to get that right we're always going to be righteous I don't think any of it thinks that anyway one of my friends was a Jim um and yeah they were having a personal training section and I don't know if you're aware of the strength building slides when you're jumping up in a box and that doesn't sound too hard you can imagine if we're going to drive you're probably not put with a monitor that's the Box you jump up in the box and then the next desk you've got another box on top of it you have to jump off the light again no I was watching a YouTube cooking this last week and he jumped in one hate this guy in the YouTube quickly you know up to here 5.90 was I'm six foot but and you can imagine a standing jump that's pretty impressive strength [Music] my friend died and they end up and do himself damage and but that's the thing we're going to not meet the Mark at the time but maybe not have to strain through the will of the energy to get to that place where God is calling us to be we're ultimately going to mix up on our journey through life some things we're going to see things we just don't mean are we going to say mean things sometimes we're going to say things will be full of Gray we're going to do things that don't feel good and sometimes imagine the thought will get judgmental and judge people too quickly but let us be a people of the league let us be quick to forgive for we all mess up it's part of the journey and it's okay we're not always going to get it right but who have the courage to be God's holy spirit moving within us in the first place that's a good possession to be in and not to mention I often do there is Grace and abundance to pick us back up the set is moving in the right direction restoring us moving in our ongoing sanctification almost there so we talked about communion with God is the ultimate reward and four ways to help us get there seeking God's kingdom first engaging in healthy rhythms and practices who are staying for the largest fire now Having the courage to be this guy my prayers in the spirit of course calling every person in this room to take a step forward take a step forward towards communion with God and take a step towards practice during righteousness that moves towards Union with God and away from achieving and seeking the plurals of others or two one or two of the tangible things we should do to make a shift towards having healthy Motors and behaviors for some of us they're setting our attention in the morning sticking up and reminding our phone to pray for some of us is picking one or two practices and taking a step or some other businesses better asking Jesus to speak through his word through others posting ourselves hitting time in our schedule carving it over need be or even just a posture saying Lord here to receive would you speak is that [Music] let's finish with that idea here we are Lord grew us more in solidness of your son Jesus okay [Music] here we are called we want to be like you I pray the long way of our heart departure was that what knows something within us is not quite like part of us has worked so hard in all these ways to just be okay in the cookie Lord if we're in that position today I pray that you would crumble those walls strip away our own kingdom and that you're a kingdom showing to us let your glory shine my husband that you may increase and we meet the increase first about you and your righteousness Lord I pray that everyone will see a role that can play in your kingdom or that we will be drawn to you they will know us and we will know you foreign
